Mock Rock Song Of The Year:

Dhunki – Mere Brother Ki Dulhan
Remember Neha Bhasin, the girl from VIVA – Channel V’s first Popstar girl band. She gets to sing this fake rock song, posed as the Katrina Kaif intro feature. She (Katrina) is a London return spoilt lass, smoking ciggies, wearing micro minni shredded denims, riffing the guitar strings to shatter bus glasses, and gigging on bus tops and in front of the fucking Taj. No kidding, Taj friggin Mahal. And oh well, getting arrested like a badass, not until she shows some choreographed moves with her groupies. Aap convinced ho gaye, yaa main aur aage bolu? [Are you convinced, or should I say some more? ]
Voice of the year / Rock Song Of The Year:

Mohit Chauhan – Sadda Haq
There should not be any dispute about who the male singer of the year will be. Mohit Chauhan’s playback for Ranbir Kapoor works well, just like Udit Narayan worked for Aamir Khan, or SP Balasubramaniam worked for Salman Khan. But more than that, Chauhan, who is more known for his mellow and soft melody songs, gets to push the envelope with the screeching and screaming sounds of Sadda Haq. Rahman gave him a new lease of life with Rang De Basanti‘s Khoon Chala, and his streak of success continued with Masakkali. But IMHO, Sadda Haq is the shining moment for Mohit Chauhan. And we hope that Rahman and Chauhan continue to surprise us with such gems.
Song of the year:

Rangrez – Wadali Brothers – Tanu Weds Manu
I will be well pissed off if the awards season next year end up not recognising this absolute gem. I feel inadequate to say much about a track which has more layers and structural intricacies than seconds in my life so far. And yet, like all great music – from Mozart to Bach to John Williams to this, it feels effortlessly stringed together in what can only be termed as a “natural” sequence. Influenced from Qawwali sounds, Rangrez, sung by the famous Wadali Brothers is a moving experience on its own. And that is what good music can do to you. I urge you to read this wonderful piece written on Rangrez by the great Indian classical singer Shubha Mudgal. This needs to be awarded if the awards were to have any sort of credibility.
Soundtrack of the year:

Delhi Belly – Ram Sampath
It is high time that this genius man, Ram Sampath got his due. Prior to Delhi Belly, he was known as the man who challenged the Roshans (The Sony Ericsson thump advert jingle was copied by Rajesh Roshan for the Krazzy 4 track, and was sued for copyright infringement). With Delhi Belly, Ram Sampath will now be known as the man who gave us DK Bose. But Delhi Belly has so much more to offer. There’s flavours of Retro in the Bappi da meets Austin Powers track – I Hate You Like I Love You. There is Bhangra for you to munch on - Switty Tera Pyaar, and a very Led Zeppelin-esque mix of the same. The GnR influence rocks out in Jaa Chudail. And Bedardi Raja is almost a very cool nod to Kajra Mohabbat Wala. The Grind Mix for this song, has already won our Dubstep Mix award. There’s more fun to be had in Chetan Shashital’s Saigal Blues. But there’s more – a perfect love ballad – Tere Siva , sung by Ram Sampath himself. For a movie which circled around potty humour, and swear words flying more than bullets, Delhi Belly’s soundtrack offered more hues of music than most musicals. An award well deserved.
