With the invasion of Audio CDs and Mp3s and Winamp et al, gone are the days of painfully rewinding a song for exactly a mentally calibrated 1.5 minutes to get to the start of your favourite song to listen to it again. “MONO” was as standard as Dolby-Digital is now and even with these technological hindrances which possibly did not unleash the composer’s brilliance to the fullest extent, there were melodies which overcame these hindrances. One such melody is SD Burman’s “Ab Ke Sajan Saawan Mein“.
From Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s cutesy, romantic simplistic 1975 comedy Chupke Chupke, this movie has lots to flaunt about. A stellar cast – Amitabh Bachhan, Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Jaya Bhaduri, Om Prakash, Asrani and above all – Keshto Mukherjee
And whenever one mentions Chupke Chupke, Ab Ke Sajan.. is definitely one of the first things that cross my mind [ apart from Dharam jee's mind-bending Hindi vocabulary and his tussle with clever Jeejaajee - Om Prakash ].
I vividly remember hearing it for the first time on Chitrahaar and quite instantly, fell in love with it.And after almost 20 odd years, I can say for sure, that it wasn’t just a mere infatuation. After all, what’s not to love about it. The teasing, naughty chedh-chaadh lyrics by Anand Bakshi written in simplistic Hindi is a perfect example of how less is more. Check out the lyrics on the second verse..
One of my favourites melody wise, as well as lyrically -
Itane bade ghar men nahin ek bhi jharonkaa
Kis tarah ham denge bhalaa duniyaa ko dhokaa
Raat bhar jagaaegi ye mast mast pavan,
Sajan mil na sakenge do man ek ki aangan men
ishh..
Ab ke sajan saawan men…
The way Lata jee renders her playful vocals on the lines – Kis Tarah Hum Denge..Bhalaaa… is just a treat to the ears. Go on, listen to the song here : YouTube Link courtesy Shemaroo.
Tch..Tch..Sharmila... sigh!
And when the Tchh Tchh.. hits home, Sharmila Tagore’s naughty expressions flirt with me, you and everyone. Don’t you think?
Koi Shaq!
And smart-ass Jeejaaji – Om Prakash along with the rest of the world is left perplexed, awestruck and spellbound
Now go straight to YouTube and listen to it right NOW. And come back to shout it out in the comments, when you first heard this, and how much you lurve it…Cheerio awesome people!!!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh another of my faves. First Khubsoorat, now this.. kya aap bhi Sujoyji!! Love, love this song
I love the ‘kaatein lagayega yeh fulon bhara chaman, fulon bhara chaman’ part
And the tsk tsk part is too cute. It always reminds me of the other tsk tsk wala song – ‘Baahon mein chale aao’ from Anamika. I also love ‘Chupke chupke chal ri purvaiyya’ esp. the lyric where Lata sings “baandh liye rut ne, pag mein ghunghroo jaise, nache man ta thaiyya ta thaiyya”
Fabulous music! Although I will be honest and say I find “Sa Re Ga Ma” maha irritating mostly due to Amitabh’s horrible over-hammy expressions
But the movie is a total win!

Exactly… beta Rahul had to follow up on Papa’s tsk tsk
.. should I do a feature on ‘Baahon Mein Chal Aao’..love that song as well.. The title song is lovely as well..
What I love most about these songs is the zero usage of Urdu, and how simplistic Hindi can be so BRILLIANTLY made lyrical..
AB’s over-the-top hyper expressions were a tribute to Rajendranath I believe, lol. Similar to what AB Jr did in Salaam Namaste hehe.

absolutely….and I would say, why don’t you do a post on “Chashme Baddoor”- quite an awesome movie. And another idea is, do one post on Utpal Dutt. He has been part of some of the most amazing movies!

Point taken Ma’am. I have the DVD of Chashme Baddoor. Will give it a revisit soon. I haven’t watched many Utpal Dutt movies. The only ones I have are – Golmaal [but of course], Saaheb and a few others. Would really like to write on Golmaal though. Thanks and keep your suggestions coming.
